Obviously half of you didn't read my other post. I don't want to hear about how you started reading the minute you popped out the womb, because that's not the point, and you're just answering a rhetorical question. We're not playing the "I started reading good books before you did" game.
I'll repeat myself in case anyone missed what I said in my earlier post:
"I was of course generalizing in regard to national averages and all that; most of the people on this forum I do expect to be above average as far as writing and reading is concerned. It's an RP forum and almost all of us do write fairly extensively, but again that's not something most of the USA's population does."
My point is we write and therefore recognize good writing. But can we like bad writing? Sure, it's possible, and we can't be too close-minded about books. That seems to be the rationale behind Puawai making this thread, correct me if I'm wrong.

You assume that I wouldn't like your story from the start. Let me reiterate. I didn't make it past the first chapter because I couldn't stand how she wrote. Like I said, the synopsis of Twilight sounds appealing. But her writing style just...I couldn't get into it. I don't expect to know the characters of the story right off the bat. I said I like complicated characters. Yes, but you're assuming that I expect them to be from the start. No. I know that's not the case. If I had that mindset, I surely wouldn't read. I couldn't finish because I didn't like her writing. Even though her characters are pretty static. ' ETA: And just because I didn't read the book past chapter one doesn't mean I'm not entitled to my opinion as well. I wasn't going to make myself read something that I saw as a joke. I know a lot about the book because my best friend was in love with it and wouldnt shut up about it. Along with all my other friends who got into it. I think it was poorly written. I think she lacked the hook to keep my attention. Okay, now I understand. The way it read to me is that you stopped reading because of the characters, not the style.

Why would that make any difference? If there's anything at all that leaves a horrible taste in your mouth after only one chapter, nothing should stop you from putting it down - least of all the thought that you might not be giving it a "fair chance". It's the author's responsibility to convince YOU that you should read their work, not the other way around.

Seriously, watch the New Moon movie. 2 hours in a cinema vs. 10+ hours wading through angst.

It's the line for New Moon. The movie starts at 12:01, the line started before 8 (when we started our movie). Conversation in the (MEN'S) bathroom: Guy1: Are you on Team Edward or Team Jacob? Guy2: Team Edward, all the way. You? Guy1: Jacob. What about you, dude? Me: You're guys, you should be on Team Whoever Gets Bella Naked On Screen First. Guy2: She's not going to get naked, it's PG-13. Me: ...and you start to see my point.

Being famous has its perks. Modified to add: It was bad. There's a scene where Edward and Bella FROLIC. They prance, slow-mo, through the woods. There were so many 'serious' moments were the entire theater burst into laughter. It was just that bad.

Why would anyone wait in line for shit like that? It's called assigned seating, internet booking and just walk the fuck up.
Jesus, the only time I wait in lines like that is when ... no, hold on, I never wait in lines like that.

It really irks me when people start spouting the stuff they read, because they think telling me they've read the Illiad at age 6 is going to impress me.
Just a pet peeve.

I remember reading the first couple of sentences of the first book. Was it called Twilight? Geesh, I can't even remember. o.o
Anyway, I grimaced and put it back on the shelf. And picked up Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead instead. I like that series. >.>

When was the last time you saw a 13-year-old reading Lord of the Rings? Frankenstein? ANY classic at all? I read classics when I was thirteen. >:[ Given they make you read so called "classics" like Dracula for summer reading and Lord of the Flies in school... Yeah. >.> To me, age doesn't matter with what you do and don't read, although it can effect your taste. Then again I'm fifteen, so I might not know squat. *Shrugs.*

Our schools never -make- us read anything (is why the average Malaysian reads 2 books a year). I picked my books out myself. I remember poring over Jane Austen, Bronte, Dickens, Shakespeare, etc. while the people around me read Sweet Valley and others. Then again, I watched Shakespeare cartoons when I was even younger. *shrugs*

Lucky. We had to read both books I listed, and those so called classics were boring to me....but Lord of the Flies was ok, I guess. Dracula was my least favorite, definetely. That book just dragged on.
It's not that I don't appreciate the "classics" and don't read them because I'm a teen. I do. They're just difficult for me to show interest in and take seriously.
