I have to say it's amazing to watch two groups getting all chummy with each other and patting each other on the back, and telling each other what great warriors you all are, and what an honor it was to battle each other, etc., etc.
Seriously. It's good to see.
It makes what I'm about to say that much easier. I guess you all forgot that the war isn't quite over yet. The Capadocians still want to fight! But there's been a little problem. All the Ferrymen are in shadows, torpor, or standing down, and we have no targets. So while we've been waiting for Ferrymen to come out of shadows, we've been taking Thalialeu down, just to kill time. She was stupid enough to believe the hype and poked her head out thinking it was safe.
Now she's lost half her blood, and with any luck we may zero her before she slips back into her shadows.
Back to the war that isn't happening...
This story really begins back during our battle with Azreal's Knights. We were fighting with the Hells Angels, and everything was going great, when HA quit on us when the fighting got hard, and pulled out of that conflict. Of course everyone knows we went on to win that war, completely destroying the clan. It no longers exists.
So when Brutus came to me with an offer of two million coins to help him defeat the Ferrymen, I was dubious, afraid he would quit on me when the going got tough, and turned him down. We already had Capadocian Volunteers fighting, and I was trying to run a massive recruitment drive. But then the Ferrymen did something extremely stupid. They attacked non-combatant Dojo students and started bragging about how they had zeroed Capadocian Warriors. You just don't do that. So we entered the war. Not for the money, we already had plenty, but in hopes that we could shake-up the Ferrymen leadership.
But first I needed to be sure that Brutus wouldn't back out on me this time, so I made it very clear my conditions to fight...
ARCHANGEL:
"If we enter the battle it would be to destroy the Ferrymen as a clan, like we did to Azrial's Knights. Would HA be into dealing out that kind of destruction? I'm getting more pissed at the Ferrymen everyday, and to totally destroy a clan takes commitment, you have to keep applying pressure long after everyone is screaming at you to stop"
BRUTUS:
"We have made a commitment to destroy the Mice, we will not stop until that is accomplished. We are in great shape, we have plenty of coins in reserve and loads of weapons at our disposal. We have discussed just targeting the top 12 or 15 of our targets but if you intend on applying 100 percent of your resources, I think that we can be very successful. I will take this as a longstanding venture and alliance between our clans. One that I will stand by in private and in public."
ARCHANGEL:
"I have given your contact info to my second officers, Hanyou and Damson. If we enter the fray, it would mean that we do not stop hitting the Ferrymen until they announce that they are disbanding."
BRUTUS:
"Agreed."
With Brutus's promise to see this to the end, I ordered the Capadocians to war, and apoligized to my clan that we had to fight. The fighting was rough for Capadocians at first. We had a really slow start. That first day we barely matched the Ferrymen blow for blow. In fact we were two hits down. But the ferrymen must have thrown everything they had at us that first day because they never attacked us with such ferocity again. From then on day after day after day we hit them 4-5 times what they hit us. In the end they hardly hit us at all, and it was clear that the end was near. We began re-engaging the Ferrymen as they emerged from torpor, just as we did Azreal's Knights, and that's when it happened...
Rather than deliver the coup-de-gras, Brutus broke the alliance and made peace with the enemy! No shit. He really did that.
So now, as we zero Thalia, We watch as the enemy sits in shadows, chumming it up with our former allies, telling each other was a great war it was. I guess popularity was more important than winning... ...again.
I'm not a popular leader. I'm not in the *in* crowd. ...and my clan doesn't fight for money.
Brutus, your two million coins was "cute". But you can have it back. We didn't use any of it. We have many times that much in our own war-chest, ok? I just don't want it said that you paid us to fight for you or anything like that. We fight because the Ferrymen zeroed our Dojo students, then bragged about the body count. Not a single Capadocian fell once we entered the war. So that little pile of coins can go back to you. If you don't want it, we'll put it with the rest. But I held it back...just for this...because I KNEW you would quit on me!
A war isn't a popularity contest.
...but it *is* a contest!
...and the winner of that contest isn't the group that surrenders, and it isn't the group that breaks an alliance to make peace with the enemy. It's the group that's still standing when the smoke clears.
It's the group that's still fighting when everyone else has quit.
