I'm doing a research project and would like to invite you to participate in a short questionnaire survey regarding MMORPG role-playing habits and history.
All participants must be over the age of 18. Sadly my IRB (Institutional Review Board - the people who make sure research studies are legal and humane) approval does not include administering the questionnaire to minors.
The questionnaire is hosted off-site (http://www.qualtrics.com). This will ensure confidentiality of the participants and their answers. I will then use SPSS to compute the results of my questionnaire. I will make available to those who participate the results overall, and the article written with the results.
This study is open to all races, genders, religious affiliations, and nationalities.
If you have any questions please let me know via email (included below) or replying to this thread. Do keep in mind that any interaction in this thread is subject to review. Basically, I have to show my Research Supervisor the thread so she can verify that I am acting in accordance with IRB standards. Please do not PM me with questions, as I need it to remain off-site in my records of interaction

MMORPG Study
What is the research about?
Role-playing games have become largely popular with all age groups as the internet has become more readily available on a general scale. This is especially true with MMORPGs (Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games) with a vast OOC (Out of Character) community of interaction in addition to IC (In Character) interactions, such as guilds and Player vs Player interaction. Research has shown that online communities based around MMORPGs (such as The Abyss City, Vampires! A Dark Alleyway, World of Warcraft, etc) function as forms of social communities. This study will be examining the seeking of social acceptance and a sense of belonging using the means of MMORPG communities in an online community setting.
What do I have to do?
If you are willing to participate, and are at least 18 years of age, you will take an online survey regarding your MMORPG behaviors and history, including questions such as when you began to play MMORPGs and what interactions you take part. You may also be asked to complete various questionnaires asking about your personality and interpersonal behaviours both in game based communities and the communities in which you live.
Will my answers be anonymous?
Your answers on the questionnaires and to the reaction time test will be anonymous. You will not be asked to put your name anywhere. You will be asked to tick a box on the consent form before completing the questionnaire.
Will the research be confidential?
Only myself and my fellow researchers will have access to the questionnaires. They will be stored in a secured online database.
What do I do if I change my mind halfway through the study?
You have the right to change your mind about participating at any point until you submit the questionnaire. If you get upset and would like to discontinue your participation, please close the browser window without clicking the Submit button, indicating that you wish to withdraw from the study if this is the case.
How long will this take?
Overall, the research should take approximately 15-25 minutes.
Who is doing the research?
Ashley *name withheld for privacy* from Brigham Young University is doing the research. Supervising over this study will be Dr. *name withheld for privacy* Coyne from Brigham Young University.
If you have any questions please email Ashley *name omitted for this medium* at strange dot devotion at yahoo dot com with MMORPG Study as the subject line.
