Let the Right One In is a vampire movie based on a novel by Swedish author John Ajvide Lindqvist. The movie was released in 2008 and is currently available on DVD so that you can enjoy it in the privacy of your own home without having to be bothered mingling with humans in a packed theater.
Without spoiling any major plot points, the story revolves around a vampire named Eli and her relationship with a young boy named Oskar. While this is marketed as a vampire movie, it is more of an exploration of the friendship and love that forms between these two characters. I found it to be a refreshing alternative to the myriad of other vampire films that simply rehash old ideas over and over again.
The film does leave out some parts of the book, but still manages to tell a wonderful story that includes many parts of vampire unlife that we tend to take for granted. For instance, one of the biggest subjects that is tackled is the problem that arises when somebody as young as Eli is turned. She was 12 when she became a vampire and although has matured and watched the world around her grow, she remains trapped in the body of a 12 year old, which comes with many limitations. The movie also addresses what happens when murders begin to occur when a new and mysterious individual moves into town. This is something that the residents of RB do not need to worry about as the humans here tend to not investigate when their friends go missing. And finally, the story delves into the issue of the long established vampire “rule” that a vampire cannot enter a home without being invited in. This again is something that we do not need to bother ourselves with here in the city, but it was interesting to see the human view of what might happen if a vampire broke this rule and entered as an uninvited guest. This is something that I do not believe I have ever seen addressed in movie or literature.
Overall, I thouroughly enjoyed this movie and highly recommend it to all. Those that have already seen the movie or read the book may have problems with my word choices to describe Eli, but I cannot go into that without spoiling part of the story. I've included the trailer below. Enjoy.
