The Fight.
Bug had heard the rumblings of a potential attack on one or more of his line. Just as he had with any such rumblings since his siring of Seth Lomax, he took them seriously, but patiently waited. He hoped this would turn to be just as the other rumors he heard, unfounded. Unfortunately, his own hopes went unrealized this time around.
“Pops! Shaar has attacked Nuru!” Came the angered shout in his mind from Seth.
“Tell no one to act until I have looked into this, agreed?” he responded just as quickly, and urgently.
“I already did, and they are waiting on my orders,” again came his son’s mental voice.
Bug had been setting himself up for a peaceful evening of one of his favorite pastimes, fishing. He had completed most of his work in the clan, and the family seemed quiet. All seemed well this night. He had made his way to his semi-secret fishing hole on the clan grounds, an out of the way spot just under a foot bridge on the path to the reedy pond behind the clan building. A moment for himself, would be most welcomed but, alas this was not meant to be this night. Bug sighed and looked longingly at his favorite fishing pole he held in his hand, and slowly placed it back under the bridge abutment. He looked himself over and chuckled ruefully at his fishing attire, “No time to change now,” he said aloud to himself. He did, however, removed the ludicrous looking fishing hat his wife hated him to wear when he was not fishing.
Bug allowed his mind to range in search of Nuruhine, and quickly found his location. ‘Seth, I am going to go and sit with Nuru. Perhaps if some of us do, she will be reluctant to strike him again. We may buy enough time to gain some info, and settle this without further blood shed,’ he sent telepathically to Seth.
‘Right, Pops. Mom is already there and some of the others are too,’ came the rapid response.
Bug sent a few queries to his people, asking them to see what they could find on this situation. Then, wanting to save some energy, he pulled out a Scroll of Succour and read it aloud while concentrating on his wife. *You join Krilee* came the words flashing through his mind. “Why does RavenBlack need to be so ostentatious and obvious? I know who I joined….” he mumbled grumpily to himself.
Spying Seth and his Krilee standing near Nuru, Bug stepped closer to them smiling widely. “Hello my love,” he said to his wife as he kissed her forehead gently. “Anything new yet, Seth?” Suddenly becoming businesslike he asked as he eyed Shaar who was watching from a little bit away.
“Nothing yet. Just some insults being shot back and forth. Looks like Shaar is pissed that Dreamy sired Munkey.” Seth replied tersely as he too continued to watch.
Bug turned and looked Nuru over, noting the burns he had received. “Have you told him to stay put?”
Seth quickly glanced over his shoulder as well, and nodded slightly, “He knows.”
A few days passed while the waiting continued. Information as to Shaar’s intents and reasons continued to find him, but it was not the exact information he was waiting on. It seemed there were conflicting stories being spread, and Bug wanted the right of it before any physical actions took place. As time and insults passed, he still waited. One piece of the puzzle was missing, and it was the most important part. The true “why” of the situation. Soon he began to receive some usable information and was about to make the necessary diplomatic contacts, when he felt the sting of Holy Water on his own person. While he reeled from the abrupt attack, he found himself in another location in the city.
“Dad! Some of us have been attacked by Shaar! Were you just displaced, or attacked? Do we attack?” again his son’s mind sounded angered.
“I have been hit and displaced by her. Wake everyone who was there and take a tally. Let me know when you have the war conference started and I will join.” Bug sent as his reply. Kneeling on the ground and surreptitiously looking for any observers, Bug silently prayed. “RB give us guidance and strength of arms as we face this, our first real test…..”
He had finished his prayers, and stood for a few moments staring at the night sky. He felt his burns keenly, and they fueled an anger he seldom felt within himself. He was slow to anger, and methodical in his actions of gathering information. But, when the time came to act, he did so with all the speed he possessed.
In the midst of one particularly brutal set of attacks, Bug heard words he was hoping not to hear. “Holy Hell! V-Rex has been hit…” Seth exclaimed to him.
“Damnit! Who did it, and has anyone spoken to V-Rex about it yet?” Bug asked.
“Dru hit him accidentally, and has already apologized and offered Necromancer fees to him,” Seth’s response eased his mind slightly, when Bug also asked if V-Rex had agreed to the Necromancer fees, and was given an affirmative response.
As the attacks continued to drag on, Seth came to Bug and explained the Ravynne and some of her childer have started attacking Dru for her accidentally throwing a single Holy Water at her father. “Some people want blood for blood. It’s up to you son, but I would allow this to go on until the blood price has been paid. See if Dru will agree, and if she does, I will go to V-Rex and explain his compensation will proportionately be decreased until the price has been taken.”
Once again Bug found himself in a random location in the city, and took a moment to speak with V-Rex via cell-phone. “I know the coins for the Necro were offered to you, as is right and proper. But as the attacks continue on Dru, the amount of coins given will be reduced. Dru apologized, and I feel it was a true apology on her part. I would prefer this be contained, but once the amount of necro has been taken from her body, we will be forced to respond in kind to those who have held with attacking her.” Bug had said to him.
Silence came from the receiver for sometime before V-Rex‘s voice came on, “ I am here, and if no coins are coming then so be it. I have no problems with Dru. I will speak with Ravy a.s.a.p.” what sounded like a slight chuckle came from Bug’s receiver, “But you know how stubborn she can be… I believe we can reach an agreement on this.” The conversation ended with a few platitudes and typical niceties people tend to use when in tense situations.
The ensuing fight seemed to last for an eternity. Bug was exhausted, and was forced many times to stop and rest himself while his family carried on, with his words encouraging them every step of the way. The Holy Water flew through the air like rain from the night skies. She fought as a true warrior would fight. No holds were barred. If too many came against her at once, she would take the hits from them, while displacing others, and hitting them as well. Bug’s energy was all but spent, when it appeared she was exhausted as well. She didn’t move for sometime. No attacks were given, nor received. Rest became the first order of business. It soon seemed Shaar had rested long enough, as the Holy Waters once again flew through the air. Now the displacements came from her sister RavynneNitewind.
Bug stood atop a small rise and watched the scene below him. Shaar was all but finished. Her energy was nearly spent, as was her blood. ‘Over all, that was a short fight, as fights in this city go. Shaarinya had taken her toll on us, myself included. She fought well.’ he thought to himself as he watched Ravynne and a few others sent Shaarinya to torpor as gently as possible. He was still musing on the recent events when he felt the presence of his son appear next to him.
“Do we step in and finish this, Pops?” Seth asked. Bug looked at his son for a few moments, while lost in thought.
“No, it is best if we let her family take care of her. She fought valiantly, and deserves her family near her now. She attacked us first but, it was driven by love. She lost her beloved childer, even though he left her of his own volition according to his words, and she has her price now. We will not push this issue with her, unless she decides to press it once again when she returns from torpor…….”
Bug looked down at himself. He was bloodied, and burned in several places. His fishing clothes now needed replacing. ‘So much for a peaceful evening spent fishing,’ he thought. Aloud he spoke to Seth, “I don’t know about the other’s but, I am going home and get cleaned up. Daylight is almost here, and I am tired.” Bug rested one hand on his son’s shoulder, “Be proud son. Shaar fought damned fine, and the family did well against her.”
“Oh, I am Pops. I told them that already. Now, go get cleaned up. You stink.” Seth laughed at Bug’s crude gesture, as Bug departed.
