Name the song and artist and I’ll give you a flower. But seriously, why do so many ‘pires in this city find it insulting to be called a user? After all, that’s essentially what we are. We use humans as a food source, we use each other for money and power and fame. It’s how we survive.. it’s how every living thing on this planet survives come to think of it. I suppose the only difference is that vampire’s don’t really give anything back. We’re at the top of the food chain in a sense because nothing really feeds off us. Except maybe the odd lycan but I haven’t seen one of those around for ages. Aside from food, we use each other for money. I mean who here can honestly say they’ve never robbed another of our kind? Not me for sure, I love money no matter how I obtain it. Something I’ve never done is use another ‘pire to get fame or notoriety. I could if I wanted I guess. Pick a sire or partner based purely on public opinion but it’s not my style. I know a lot of folk do it, social climbing.. hopping from sire and clan to sire and clan purely to get that buzz out of strangers knowing their name but really.. is that all you aspire to in unlife? I suppose if the sire in question is aware that they are just being used as a stepping stone then technically it’s not using them, but it’s still kinda.. tacky. Another way that we use is each other is to resort to playground bullying tactics to get the approval of one of the “popular” ‘pires. We’ve probably all witnessed some poor noob in the ghettos get his or her arse handed to them on a plate by a couple of so called elder vamps purely for the “lulz”. But it works, as an aggressive species it’s in all of us to enjoy such a spectacle. But do we all do it? No but we are all capable of doing so.
I’ve recently fallen foul to another way of being used. Actually two ways aimed at achieving a common goal. The first was as the threat in an attention-seeking episode. Something along the lines of “If you don’t pay attention to me I’ll bring shame on our line by dating Bambi.” Not really sure if it worked or not as I didn’t stick around long enough to find out. The second was “You aren’t noticing me so I’ll lead Bambi on and make him think I’m serious then ditch him when you start to look my way again.” Again, not sure if that achieved much other then to give me a lesson in trust but hey, we all learn from our mistakes. Actually I didn’t know I was such a good blackmail tool.. I should start to make money out of it. You ever see that show called My New Best Friend or something? Where they had to pretend that this really awful bloke was their best friend in order to win money? I could get into something like that.. but anyway, I digress.
Are we all losers? I think in a lot of ways we are. And yea I’m including myself there. Losers, because in a short space of time a lot of us will loose loved ones and friends and family over nothing. A petty fight can tear a line apart.. we go to war over nothing.. insults or funny looks. And we give up our time to help really ungrateful ‘pires who stab us in the back. We devote half our unlife to childer who sever at the drop of a hat when someone more noteworthy comes along or who vanish without a word. And what makes so many of us into even bigger losers is that we just accept whatever comes our way. Why don’t we fight harder for the person we love or to get what we want?
But I’m not accusing anyone of being any worse or any better then me. It’s not my place to pass judgement nor is it my right. I do wish that some folk would look harder at who they are and what they’ve become though. And at the knock-on effect that their actions can cause. At why they feel they have to rip a weaker ‘pire to shreds in front of their peers in order to make themselves feel better, or is it to deflect negative attention from themselves? Why they feel they have to have the best sire and be in the best clan.. and why their opinion of which is the best of both changes with the wind? Why they need to constantly have the approval of others in order to feel at peace with themselves.. what is missing from their unlife that makes them so very insecure?
Maybe that is why we use others and why we rarely get what we want.
Because none of us really know what it is.
