All right, so, here's the deal.
I was in the suburbs today, and we were talking to a certain MR25 who has never been much in the way of entertainment. It was discovered, however, that he thinks he can rap. Reading his lyrics, obviously, provided boundless entertainment and led me to this idea.
I think we should have a poetry slam, and allow the readers of The Bite to vote on their favorite work. As the idea was spurred by a rap, raps, song lyrics, etc. are also acceptable. (Not prose: if you wanna write prose, there are a million other sections to do it in.)
This is, to me at least, entertaining both ways: bad poetry makes me laugh and I love reading good poetry. I know plenty of 'pires who will feel the same.
And, of course, the promise of coin. The winner's pot is undecided as of yet, but I'll post it as soon as I know for sure. (Talking to a few...benafactors, shall we say. I'm not quite in a position to give away large amounts of my own coin. Also, if you'd be interested in adding to the pot, you're more than welcome, naturally. All donations will be both privately tallied and publicly noted so that no shady work can be done.)
I think this should prove quite entertaining.
(Also: end date is as of yet undecided. I'll work out the details soon, swear.)
Official Tally of Donations:
Edan: 11,343
Krimzen: 20, 191
Majica: 50,000

This... is a fabulous idea. I watched a girl do this amazing poetic piece at a slam once about "the amazing 31 flavors of Baskin Robins". She was so passionate and it was the most memorable thing I'd ever seen... it was also terribly funny.

I believe the first every poetry slam was at the Cafe - last year sometime;
HRmmm Gevurah, Boomer, Carpathia and.... bugger what was her name again, I'm pretty sure the fourth was Altania....
Now - who was the judge again. Dammit... I can't remember. Maybe it was Altania.. or.. bah, my memory fails me. Maybe the contestants that night can remind me.
Feel free to use the venue again if you've a mind. The place has a raised platform that worked quite nicely the last time.

If memory isn't fucking with me tonight, I think Zuri once tried to have a poetry contest too; talked about it on the VNN. The judges were going to be Majica, Tejas and someone else I can't remember. I'm also pretty sure it never happened in the end... And by the way, rap isn't poetry. So you can take this contest and 'slam' it up your arse

Oh, and certain words bolded for major agreement.

I love poetry!
Well, not really. But I'd still crash this slam-thing. Maybe. We'll see. Bitches must be missin' me.

Never claimed that I thought rap was poetry. Just that it's horribly entertaining when it's poorly written.
In any case! I think having it in the cafe is a great idea. Thank you, Damari! So then...here, I'll be adding the dates and details (and then there will be the usual discussion, I'm sure) and the slam itself will take place in the cafe.
I've changed the idea about making it reader-voted, though, because I was tired last night and seemed to miss the realization that that opens room for this to turn into A) a popularity contest or B) easy grounds for cheating.
So, there will be judges, to be announced soon. If anyone has a suggestion or wants to put their name in for a judging position, feel free to speak with me or to mention it here. Obviously, if you are a judge, you can't enter.
I have a few k secured for the prize and it should be growing. I'll be adding updates as I get them!
ETA: The prize is currently at 13, 343 coins and climbing. 2k from Pink (thanks, dolly!) and the rest from Edan, who is, as of now, awesome.

Actually, you're both wrong, Idony and Kat. Rap is very much poetry. Just because it doesn't appease your idea of what poetry should look like or be, doesn't make it not. --- Very good idea, NewFriend.

I might actually argue with you there, Edan, if I thought you were even familiar with actual poetry. But as you most certainly are not (because then, you wouldn't be talking out of your arse), my point needs no more ulterior support.

Okay, so, updates.
The slam will open in the cafe on September 1st and close on the 30th. (As far as judging and prizes go, anyhow. Poems given after are welcome; they just won't be eligible for the coin!)
Also, the prize has gone up again: Marion has offered to contribute 5k. This puts the current total for the prize money at 18,343 coins and counting.
Still looking for judges!
ETA: We now have one of the judges all set! Very excited to have Inu on board!

Normal poetry is ghey so mad hardcore nigras made an alt version with moar violence and ... stuff. Pimps? That sounds right. Question. Is "My Humps" rap?

How interesting... I may just attend such an event.
Curiousity peaks me, though. Are contestants only allowed to present one peice or are they allowed to bring forth more than one? There is not a big grounds of rules so far.

All right! More updates! (Yaaaay!) So, first off, I want to give a HUGE thank you to Majica! She has not only offered to be one of the judges (bringing the total to two lovely ladies ), she has ALSO donated a whopping 50k, bringing the current prize total to 68,343k. She's also giving a lot of help and support in a few very important details of the contest. Thank you so much, Majica! Next, the rules (this list will almost definitely get longer as I think of things, but this is what I have thus far): 1) Poems absolutely MUST be original. Anyone found to be in any way stealing someone else's work will be immediately disqualified. (That one's kind of a given. But it's also a biggie, so there you go.) 2) It's completely impossible (and unfair) to exclude family and close friends of judges. HOWEVER! Any attempts made to sway a judge, including but not limited to: bribery, harassment, blackmail, threats (yes, even playful ones), begging, etc, will result in immediate disqualification. 3) Okay. I'm going to limit entry to two poems, max. This is mostly to prevent too terrible of a flood for our fabulous judges to wade through. Pick your best work and go with it. The use of thralls to submit extra poems is, obviously, prohibited. 4) Entry is free to all and highly encouraged! Only one contestant is going to recieve the coin pot, but a lot of you guys are probably going to surprise people with how talented you are! And that's awesome! (Ra ra ra!) 5) I'm standing by what I said before, despite what a lot of you seem to thing. Song lyrics and raps ARE acceptable, as well as, obviously, poetry. I think the performances of songs and raps should make the night even more interesting. Prose is not allowed. If anyone has any questions regarding anything, let me know. Particularly if it's rules-related! (Because I'm SURE there are rules that ought to be there that I've neglected.) ((Notes on the way the slam should be RPed! Entering a poem by itself will not affect the judges' opinions of the poems, and therefore the chances of winning, as I am going to take all of the poems from the thread and send them to the judges to be scored once the slam is over. However, RP surrounding the poems is encouraged since the slam will be taking place in the cafe. Does your character dress up to present the poem? More importantly, how does your character perform the poem? Adding RP around the poetry, I think, will greatly add to the effect and make it more of a "performance". On that note, remember. This IS being roleplayed as a public performance! It's not a written contest. Your character is NOT mailing the poem, putting it online, et cetera. Your character is performing it. Please, though, make a clear seperation between roleplay and poetry. It would be preferable if you could indent before the poetry and then italicize, like so. Roleplayroleplay! Poetry!Roleplay! Et cetera. Again, I will be going through and taking your poem from the roleplay and sending all of the poems to the judges, so if there isn't a clear division, parts of your poem could be missed. Also! I'm just going to say this OOC because I don't want to have to figure out how to say, "the first post in this thread" IC. If anyone is interested, I will be keeping a tally of all of the donations that are phsyically in my bank account in the first post of this thread.)) All right, guys! Majorly excited! I hope to see bunches of you involved! ETA: The gorgeous Krimzen is donating 20k, bringing the total up to 88,343k thus far! Thanks, Krimmery!

Any attempts made to sway a judge, including but not limited to: bribery, harassment, blackmail, threats (yes, even playful ones), begging, etc, will result in immediate disqualification. Seems to me and if I remember correctly, during Zuri's contest, submissions were to be given anonymously so that Judges were unaware of whom had written what and I believe a number was to be assigned.. grrr.. I'll look for the breakdown and/or see if I can get in contact with Zuri on how he had originally set it up.
I think he'd be pleased to see something he'd worked very hard on finally becoming a reality. And it's nice to see a city wide event that everyone can participate in and have some good fun!

If it's anonymous, then it wouldn't be a true "slam". The whole point of a slam is reading one's poetry aloud, giving it the proper dramatic reading that the writer believes goes with it. Sometimes props are even used.
Anonymously, it'd just be a flat out poetry contest based on content, not on performance.
