I started off in this city as a master vamp w/o a surname untill I was sired by Gevurah Merovingian. Being a Merovingian was a great honor to me. I had so many family members that it was hard to keep track of them all. But when I saw that Merovingian name in someones signature or banner, I knew they were family and I would do what I could to help them. The Merovingian name has a long and lustrous history. You could say that 90% of what I know was learned while I was under his tutelage. But alas there came a deep rift in our relationship and I severed from that family and could no longer call myself Merovingian.
For months, I would receive messages from other pires that were still calling me by the name though. I had to take steps to actively disassociate myself. So I chose a surname that everyone could see and they would know immediately that I was something other. But I wanted to still acknowledge my upbringing with the Merovingians.
Historically, the Merovingian bloodline has had many bloodlines interwoven. And I decided to pay homage by choosing a name that would reflect a historic association. Sinclair really stood out to me. For it was the Sinclair line that speculatively held the blood of Christ and would bear the messiah (or anti-christ according to christian mythology). The concept of Messiah resonated with me since I had been calling myself the Messiah for a while already. Do I -really- believe myself to be The Messiah? No. But I do believe that in some small way I did save someones soul.
As far as someone using the Sinclair name goes... Well I have no problems with a member of my family using it. However, If you are in general an ass and an embarrassment, then I will strip you of that right. I share the rights to Sinclair fully with my bound partner Genevive. Her childer also carry that name.
I do like it when a pire has a surname, because I can quickly associate them with a particular group w/o doing a SS on them. It doesn't necessarily mean that they march in lock step with the master of that line. But it gives me a place to start. However, what annoys me is when you get a sire hopping pire that changes their surname every 3 weeks. Or the pire that takes more than one surname from the same line. For example, when pires were running around as Wilde St. John's. To me either you were a Wilde or a St. John. Using both names just strikes me as pretentious name dropping. Now, take Katastrophe for example. She takes the name of her sire and hyphenated it with the name of her bound partner. That doesn't bother me at all. Because it actually associates two bloodlines that are joined by her union.
