I know I'm coming into this late, but - Who says vampires have to be polite? We are evil and base creatures. Politeness is a HUMAN value.

Do we REALLY have to be like hyenas and baboons just because we are vampires? Not everything that humans do should be thrown away. After all, don't we also love? How disgusting! After all, don't we also hate? How disgusting!
Politeness is like a treat, when it is genuine. It does not prevent one from being abrasive or insulting, it just helps for the first few seconds, before it hits home...

Well, one does miss a lot sometimes.
When I first came to this place, I tried to be polite and considerate of the vampires that were obviously here far longer than I have been. And at times that may have been wasted efforts on my part. Politeness (from my view) seemed to slip inbetween the current incarnation of the city and the original one as a larger practice. For every vampire I ever encountered that accepted my efforts with the same grace I tried to display, I had 2 others who immediately assumed I was weak, a coward, or sucking up. And if I was power paranoid as most of them were I probably would react the same way as well.
Yes, the veiled threat or accusation is almost a lost skill, yet at times it serves a better purpose to simply stand back and listen to others verbally beat each other to death with clubs, because so much escapes in the process a more civilized conversation might not yield.
But regardless, to open a conversation with anyone within this city with politeness is a gesture of respect. Even in the most violent of situations where it may be painfully obvious this matter at hand might turn to blows, there is nothing wrong with acknowledging the post and caliber of your opposite at the time. What transpires past that point is debatable, but you can say you at least tried.
But as some have pointed out in this, such pleasantries are wasted. I am not speaking of an approach like Seyda mentioned earlier, but this city is now being populated by those who simply haven't a clue. Any measure of courtesy is likely to get reactions such as "What are you? A fag or something?" to "Oh yes, you best be scared and talk nice to me" and others. To which you follow simple lines of politeness and demonstrate why they got the entire concept wrong. Splish-splash and all of that. Where in dealing with an approach like Seyda suggested-it may not be Miss Manners in action, but at least you know where you are standing in the subject at hand and even then, a thank you might not be so far out of the question.
Does politeness equal respect? Sometimes it does. I hope we haven't de-volved to the point that a simple hello is grounds to kick in the Paranoid Alert System. Hairbear was right, it does not automatically default to respect or sincerity by any means. And as for the list of colorful synonyms, I probably embody every singe one of them and then some. Why? Because that is what I am.
So if someone such as myself approached you with politeness, the question is am I being sarcastic or not. First time I meet anyone? It is sincere. After that, let your conscious be your guide and recall our past encounters.
So, as dragonet mentioned-do we really have to be animals when dealing with each other? Apparently so, if for no other reason to make sure the vamp we are talking to understands us totally. But, as an animal that has learned how to appear as a man, I prefer the word games.
Drives them all crazy.

Wot the fuck is Polite tea? Is that like one of them weird flowery drinks that poofs and middle aged wimmen drink?
And as fer the way folk talk, if ya don't like it, don't listen. Mind yew, ya do that and who knows wot yer missing out on?
I mean it is rather un-pc to assume a person is lacking in morals or social skills simply because they drop the odd H, what what? One could have simply chosen to adapt ones dialect to suit ones peer group or to create a new identity for oneself eh old bean? It's frightfully old fashioned to judge a book by it's cover!
Actually it reminds me of that classic joke.. An old man has a valet called Waddle. Waddle waits on his master hand and foot, taking care of his every desire. One night the old man decides to take a bath so Waddle runs him one, adds the salts and then helps the old man undress and get in. After a few moments of sitting in the soapy water, the old man lets rip with a loud fart and Waddle leaves the room. He returns a moment later carrying a bottle of Evian. The old man stares at him and says "Who gave you permission to help yourself to that?" To which Waddle says.. "Why you did Sir. I distinctly heard you say.. Whada-bouda-whadar-boddle-waddle"
