Alright, as most people know I've got applications out for moderators.
I intend to assign moderators to sections (IE, OOC, Miscellaneous, News, Entertainment, Opinion, etc.) so that no one moderator (besides me) controls the ENTIRE forum and no one moderator gets overwhelmed.
So, what I'm trying to gauge from the other members is.. how many moderators is enough? One per section, a few per section, it depends based on how much activity each section gets, no more than ___ number of moderators PERIOD, or what?
Weigh in, because I'm feeling really bad about turning people away and I've gotten a lot more people interested than I anticipated.

I think 5 exactly, including yourself, would be plenty for a board this size. Preferably with different times of being online.

What little I've learned from having forums for RB and other things, the fewer moderators you have the better. Too many moderators means that more than likely someone's not being utilized or one or two people are doing the bulk of the jobs. Which I've seen happen way too many times to count.
To start out with 5 or less would be good. If you realize three months down the road you need more, then add one or two. And hold them accountable for their jobs. Granted it's all volunteer work but if they're not doing the job after x amount of time/warnings then boot them. You'll always find folks willing to moderate, especially when the BITE generally runs so smoothly.
Last piece of advice, and you can tell me to shut up now, lay out their duties clearly. What they can and especially can NOT do, without coming to you. Otherwise someone's going to step too far and piss off a group of folks. And we've all see that happen on the forums.

Anyone who's noticed the new Staff section pop up on the bottom, even though you can't see what's in it, will probably guess that I've been working on exactly that all day.
I've sent out massive application packets to gauge everyone's modding styles and ethics, and I've put together another packet based on the responses I've gotten that's basically said, "This is what you've gotten wrong, this is what we do and don't do," that anyone who does get accepted to be a mod will be able to see after Tuesday. I'm really working on putting together something serious because I think I am a little lax with moderation but not so much that we need a complete overhaul. We just need a tighter ship, a little bit.
I don't want to change things so much that people start hating Bite, I just wanna know that there are a few people to look out for things in case we get kicked out of our house sooner than we think and I end up gone for a while.

I think 5 sounds good to me. As Nara and others said, more then that too many cooks in kitchen. Less then that and you run the risk of having that huge job all on you

Ten is too much, and less than five might not be enough given the level of activity here. Five or six would probably be good.

From my experience with The Abyss (as in, you know, back in the day it didn't sit around all dead like), small numbers are most effective and appreciated. I'm not entirely certain what number I'd recommend, though. Two? Three? Thereabouts.
[ Edited to clarify on timeframe. ]

I think between three and six would be best depending on the jobs you need filled. Laying out the goals and jobs clearly will definitely help you decide what you're looking for I think, and I also think time zone diversity might be best as well.

I agree with Liz(melanctha) here. But if I were you, Sirena, I'd be asking people you've noticed having decent behavior and such instead of taking applications. Not that everyone who submitted an application is one of those power-seeking, 'look at me I'm a mod now' type, but most usually are. Good luck with finding decent people.

I've learned from experience that a bloated mod-team isn't healthy.
I'd stick with between three and five with clear rules regarding moderation. I'd suggest taking people who you -know- can work well together but may not actually be friends. I'd also suggest a whole hell of a lot of other stuff that is effectively meaningless drivel unless you actually wanna du hear >.>
Hit me up on YIM if you want to talk <3

Well, I'm finding that I might pick one person with an affiliation to Coquette based on their experience in moderating, but I don't want the crowd to cry "You picked your friends omfg Lokason/Ygg/Coquette's friends version of WakeUp" or anything else. Which is why I did take applications. I figured it was the best way to seem to most unbiased as well as kind of get a feel for the people who expressed an interest in moderating.
Some people did better on the applications and understanding moderation than others. Some were flat out lazy with their answers and did not show any understanding at all. Obviously, you don't want those people to moderate.
I think based on the results of this poll (which will be closed tonight, but as a preliminary decision based on what appears to be the consensus) I'll probably assign 6 moderators, since I like even numbers, and place one on each session, all on the "news" and "OOC" sections (since the OOC section needs to be watched the most as it does have both the most activity and the most rules, and the news sections often have the most things that need to be moved/moderated) and I'll continue to moderate the 'roleplay' section on my own, because that really doesn't need much moderation at all.
And if that didn't make sense, here you go.
News: All mods Announcements: 1 mod + me Blood Sports: 1 mod + me Opinion: 1 mod + me Entertainment: 1 mod + me Classifieds: 1 mod + me Miscellaneous: 1 mod + me Roleplay: Me! OOC: All mods
I like the idea of splitting up powers because then basically.. if I screw up on any section, it's on me, but other mods aren't responsible for sections they're not responsible for, which basically a) cuts down on power freakouts in everyone but me *preens* and b) doesn't overwhelm anyone but me on terms of activity and stuff you have to focus on. I know from personal experience that the entire forum is a lot to deal with when I'm anal enough to sit and read every post I've missed and I actually have the time.
Poll closes tonight, so make sure you weigh in or give me any more suggestions?

Even for a forum as large as Bite i'd say no more than 6 mod (and if you can) from as many different time zones as possible. Like Liz said lay out the rules and responsibilities of mods in the staff section and make them all sign and agree to it. I'd also lay out possible consequences for not adhering to these rules. Of course most things are handled on a case by case basis but at least you're giving the general idea of what you expect from your staff.
The only problem I see (and have come across) with certain mods handling certain sections is people getting upset if someone else reports something from their area. It sounds like you have things thought out though. Best of luck!
