Psh. I grew up with fairy tales. Nothing wrong with that. And. I've come to a point where I am seriously considering adding Greek mythology to the list of bedtime stories I want to tell my kids. Those not involving rape and sex, of course. Most fairytales, once upon a time, were about just that. Sleeping Beauty, for example, woke up to the kicking of her twins after the prince took advantage of her in her sleep, rather than to a kiss. Cinderella was passed off to new lands and there the prince enslaved her as his wife. Blah blah blah. v. interesting when you look into it. Kinda scary that there was once a time when parents really told that shit to their kids. lol.

Yeah, the fairy tales in their original form were truly creepy. I wish they were easier to find than the softened versions of today. I knew The Little Mermaid ended in suicide in excuse for murder, but I never knew Sleeping Beauty was about somnophilia! I want to read that now >.<

I knew The Little Mermaid ended in suicide in excuse for murder, but I never knew Sleeping Beauty was about somnophilia! I want to read that now >.< I was wrong about Cinderalla, got confused. She actually kills her first stepmother so her father will marry the housekeeper instead. The one I got confused with is an old tale that ends quite similarly but starts with a king who wants a wife who fits in his dead wife's clothes, and his daughter does, so he insists on marrying her. She's creeped out, so she says that in order to marry her he must get her a chest that locks from the inside and outside and travels over seas, and he does. To prove it, he locks her in and sends her away to sea. Her plan works and she ends up at another country working as a scullery maid for the king, from there on comes the cinderella story... The little Mermaid is something like that. I think the original Andersen one contains the potion making her feel like she's walking on knives, but then the guy she falls for doesn't get with her and marries someone else so she kills herself. The full Sleeping Beauty one ends with the prince returning and promising to send for her and the kids later, conveniently forgetting to mention that he’s married. When the trio is eventually brought to the palace, his wife tries to kill them all, but is the king stops them. In the end, Sleeping Beauty gets to marry the guy who violated her, and they all live happily ever after. Another chesty one is the Penta one where the king falls in love with his sister when his wife dies. To make him fall out of love with her she chops off her hands, and the king gets upset and locks her in a chest and throws her out to see. I think some people try save her but she's thrown back for some reason or another, then the king of another land rescues her. They get married and have a baby, but some woman who's jealous of her (I think that's the reason why she got thrown back out to sea) intercepts the message that the baby has been born which is being sent to the King who is away and changes it to say that Penta had puppies. Other stuff happens. Jealous wife is burnt. Penta and the king live happily ever after. Weird. There's a lot. The best ones to look at are the original Brothers Grimm ones, or original Andersen ones. >.> *slightly obsessive*

Cora, try Italian Folktales by Italo Calvino or Giambattista Basile's Pentamerone. They both have the more macabre type of tales of Sleeping Beauty, at least.

Katie, those are awesome >.> Makes me feel like a kid all over again. & Rena, yesh! I think I read about those in Wiki (short memory span, yeah <.<). My reading list is growing and growing.
You mean there's any other version? I grew up listening to it being told that way; now I realise I'd almost forgotten about that bit >.> I think I have it in some books back home, but you might want them in a language you'd understand XD

I think the only Romanian words I know wouldn't even be in the text. But I was looking for the video, rather than the books. Could it be Shelley Duvall's Faerie Tale Theatre? I can't remember. >.< Anyways, there's the softer Disney version that we're all familiar with.

I just have to say, I am always glad to find people who devour books in the way that I do. To start with a few that I always reccomend:
If you're into gay sex, torture, horror type stuff, look into Poppy Z. Brite. Any of her books are excellent for something a little different from your usual novel.
Piers Anthony is always a good choice for something light.
The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan is a good read. I'm in the middle of it now, though he died before completing the last book.
The Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams is an absolute must read, I think.

All this incest reminds me of Oedipus Rex. *Shudders.* Still only on the third one, but I like the Maximum Ride series by James Patterson. Love all the short chapters. Harry Potter too, of course, and Lord of the Flies was all right but a little too dark. I feel like I'd like Jodi Piccoult once I'd get past all the sex.
