Just because I don't want the banner thread to get flooded with it.
There isn't anything wrong with charging people for making their banners. Nothing wrong with that at all. If someone is amazing with PS, Gimp, Paint.Net, or whatever else, and they feel they should charge people in order for them to be able to wear their greatness, more power to them. But something I had to learn early on as a blossoming banner maker (still blossoming, mind you), there is always someone who can do better work than me. And some of those people do their banners for free.
And that is why I don't charge people for banner requests. There are countless others who can do WAY better work for free. I don't want to put myself in a position where I'd lose customers because they're going to someone who is better than me and does it for free.
Another reason is...I don't think I deserve to be paid for something I'm doing as a hobby. If it were a real job, yes. But it isn't.
Discuss!
If you charge, why do you charge?
If you don't charge, why don't you?

I charge people I don't know who ask when I'm not in the mood to make something. If I'm in the mood and enjoy doing it (Halloween ones), I do it for free. Pulse and Josephine's business is great. They have their own, unique style around here.
If you have your own, unique style, there's nothing wrong with charging. But charging for uncreative crap with no artistic merit that has been done [much better] by someone else that absolutely anyone can and would do free is... ridiculous.
Unless people offer to pay.

I don't charge, never have, and never will. There've been times where people have offered me money and I declined. I mostly agree with Dee over why I don't charge.
Another good reason why I don't charge is because I'm not someone who's gonna dick with a banner for hours and hours and hours if I can't get it to look quite right. More often than not if I can't work out a banner I'll just abandon it for hours, days, weeks, or even abandon it alltogether. In some ways getting paid gives your "customer" the right to be like "Where's my banner" after x amount of days, and it's truly not something i want to be pestered over.
If someone asks me for a banner I'll usually give them an "I'll see what I can do" for fear of locking myself into some sort of commitment. <.<;
But yeah, I think I'm a decent banner maker, definitely not the best, nor am I at the bottom of the heap, and I like some banners more than I like others.
Plus giving stuff away makes me feel generous, even if I'm not really. Lol.

Oh, Mar Mar. You touched on something that is a big problem when it comes to banner making. I don't charge as I already said. But I don't make banners when I'm not in the mood to. Only because I don't want to risk shoveling out something I'm not going to like.
....I feel like some people don't understand that.
And I feel like others don't understand that literally NAGGING me with "Where's my banner?" "I want my banner in such and such time." does not make me want to work on your banner. It literally sucks out the fact that I would put a lot of my efforts into making it beautiful. It's a shame it happens to some of us who don't charge. Jace (whom I love very much. >.>) told me to start charging people because some times people are rude when it comes to banner making. But I haven't because I don't want to punish others for a few bad impatient apples.
But I have made a list that contains names of people I -refuse- to make banners for because of how rude and impatient they are.

Which is why I charge/just say no when I don't like the person.
Example: Andie's a sweetie. She gets a nice, free banner. Person X, who shall remain unnamed, begs for a banner, so I tell 'em I want 40k in advance. They go away. >.>

I make banners whenever I feel like it. If I like you or the model you use, you might get a banner even if you didn't ask for one. I don't charge because people don't ask me for banners.

Dee pretty much hit everything. I don't charge for things I enjoy doing, simple as that. Sometimes my muse disappears and I don't do them for a long while, and then other times I just see photos for a character and they spark a creative streak (or make me want to tinker around with the photos).

My point exactly...not t mention i'm not exactly Jace at making banners. So Airey got into it with Risika's player IC because she wanted to pay... I really don't feel comfortable with Airey or myself taking coin for banners.

If someone actually accepted my "pay me 40k," I'd probably tell them that I just didn't want to do a banner for them. But I like setting my prices high. It means people I don't like all that much don't ask a second time! ;D

I personally don't think I'm good enough to charge. I make them when I'm in the mood to occupy myself, or trying to avoid some bit of school work. I will admit there are some people that get on my nerves constantly when they ask for a banner, and then constantly ask about it while I'm working on something else, and I have a small list with those that I won't make them for. I make them because I like to, and enjoy the difficulty of figuring out how to do things. I love that some of the amazing banner makers do them for free, it shows that they do what they love. Sure, I'd like to donate coins to their character because of the work but I've been told several times to keep them.

I've never charged for what I do, but why charge for a banner? I know I'm not the best and I'm not the worst. Only ever had one person not be deterred by not wanting the coins, so I accepted them.
Only one thing annoys me is when I make a nice one for someone, then they say 'Can you make me another one?' Then that one turns out to be overly simple thing they could have done and is ugly to boot. I'm picky sometimes I guess. >.>

To be honest, from a design point of view, most of the banner work I've seen on this and the other forums involving this game are not pieces that I would even consider paying for with in game coins or real life money. Knowing how to cut an image from one photograph and placing it onto another with text in a program like Photoshop or GIMP is one thing, but knowing the rules for proper design and layout is an entirely different thing.
Yes, as has been pointed out in other areas, I don't have any banner works on display in this forum. Not because I don't know how to make them, but because I choose not to make them. I have been instead, among the myriad of other things, working on other design works, improving on some of my old T-shirt designs, creating cover art for a collection of poems that I'm planning on compiling into a book, and other such ideas.
So do I think someone should be charging anything for banners for this forum, or others for this game, not really. There is to date only person who I would consider paying for their work, and this because I have been the person they have turned to for critiquing their work, so I've been able to the quality of work they do improve dramatically from their very first piece.

But if I asked someone who I knew did amazing work and they asked to be paid a reasonable price, I wouldn't mind paying for it. But from what I can tell, people love making banners and do it for free. And, about nagging for banners. If I think the person's forget about making it, (which on a couple of occasions they have, which I completely understand, not bitching about it) I'll just ask them nicely if they did, or if they want to leave it for a while. But I won't constantly sit and stalk them. At the end of the day sitting whining about it won't get you anywhere.

I don't have a problem paying for a good banner, since I don't always have the time or energy to put into one. I think it's up to the banner maker; Whether or not they want to do it for free probably depends on whether or not they have the time/enery/want to do it. Like Melkya's player said, using gimp or photoshop is pretty simple so it's not always something I would consider a job. But people who are skilled sometimes take hours to put into a banner, and that can be worth something I think. I don't personally charge for mine. There are many others way better than me in that area. But if I did charge, it would be because I REALLY don't have the time/energy/want to do it. And I'd make damn sure it was a good banner if I got paid. lol
