I was lying in bed the other day, just thinking to myself about certain aspects of being a vampire when it dawned on me (no pun intended) that I have no idea how I’m supposed to state my age. I mean I know how old I was when I was turned and how long I’ve been this way but do I add the two together or do I simply age myself according to the time I was embraced?
Or maybe I should state my age as that which I was when turned, seeing as how my body is no longer ageing? If I go with the amount of years since my turning, I’d be nearly three years old, which really doesn’t sound right. Especially not when I associate with vampires who are six hundred plus years old. It’s really confusing. We should have a handbook like they do in Beetlejuice, the “Handbook for the Recently Deceased” (great movie by the way.. classic) even if it’s just for the likes of me.
Back on topic, my standard response when asked my age is to simply say “I’m legal”, which might not even be true, depending on how I’m supposed to age myself. This just gets more complicated the more I think about it. So.. am I as old as my body, as old as my vampire tendencies or the sum of both?
Anybody?

Sum. I go by the sum, which makes me 19, even if I still look 17. Mind over matter, and all that... Hi, hubbs

A)How long have you been in the City? B) When were you turned?

I was turned shortly before coming to the city, like the day before. So I was turned less than a month before my 29th birthday, and I will always look about 28. I'm 30 now.
And as I said, shortly before I came to the city, so I've been here a year and seven months? That's about right.
I guess I don't have that whole "How old am I?" thing to worry about yet since I'm not centuries old. The thing that annoys the hell out of me is those who try and tell me that I'm so young because I've been in the city for less than two years. That doesn't make me an almost-two-year-old and has absolutely no bearing on my age. I might be young in vampire years because many are a century older or more, but that's about where it ends.

I was turned at 24 years of age. I am now... ahhh, 484? I think.
Sum of all years seems the most logical.

Yes, four hundred and forty eight...you're only MONTHS older than I am. I hate you for that by the way.

An old way of doing it is to say ' X Years under the blood' or just 'X year Undead' which suggests your just counting from the night you were embraced. Mortal age really don't matter for much else other than description, though you might like to chuck it on your character years and call it 'Apparent age' plus the Year you were embraced if your that fastidious (Not you Bambie, I meant anyone ) It really should just be 'How long have you been in the city?' Like what Vespertine said.

Well, I'm gonna just let it be that you know how to add and subtract, but 484 vs. 448 is, ummm... not a difference of 8 months. You're age is getting to you there, Lyric. Or maybe Louvain forgot the correct age?

Years based in the city, mortal years, turned years are all semantics. True age is defined by wisdom and that can be found at any age.

hm.... i feel strange that there's not a standard for this... not that i've ever really thought about it ...till now. Thank you, Bambi for bringing this up Cause i'm curious too... Generally when i'm asked I give whatever will satisfy the one asking. Mostly it goes something like "I was turned at the age of 23. But I have walked this earth for nearly 1 thousand years." If then, they inquire about my time in the city--which i feel is... not relavent to my AGE.... --I will answer them that as well. Frankly, I find it kind of silly to guage ones age by years in the city.... unless of course, you are a ...new ...pire who was turned upon entering these streets. Asking ones AGE...and expecting the length of time in the city is...comparable to asking a grown human how long he has been in...say.... Atlanta. Oh..he might say, "My whole life!" or "I grew up here!" but he might also say "only three years." And...surely a grown human cannot be just 3 years old... Am i making sense? Anyway--i guess that means I go by the years I have wandered the earth. Including my human years... as they were time spent growing and interacting with others too. *shrugs*

300 years old this month!
And yes - I go from the time I was born as a human to now. After all, when you ask someone how old they are you are asking them how many years they've been on the planet for - As Errah pointed out. Why on earth would a question about age be relating to how long you've been in the city for?
I've done more and seen more than a lot of folks in my time wandering. Can't exactly say I'm almost 2 and done all that now then can I!

I am... old enough to be outdated, yet still around... I've been around a little more than 3 centuries, 9 tenth of that time as a vampire. My memory is still perfect, but I have to admit the interesting part has been starting when my original sire opened my coffin.
I try to understand which age is the most relevant to the person I'm talking to, and then state it, be it apparent age i.e. age when turned, or time spent as a vampire, or time in the city. I have discovered that eventually, none of these ages matter when it comes to ascertaining the worth of a vampire.
I have seen newly arrived/newly turned vampires with more substance and greatness than a lot of vampires who've been around in and out the city. The relevant issue being quite often "who's your sire/clan", and "are you fully powered". Until one is fully powered, one is a youngling to my eye. After that, everyone walks their own path to greatness.
