I just realized that Emma and I made a fantastic joke about apples/oranges and gammadion/swastika.
That only took, what... an hour and a half to notice it?
Awesome.

I would like to know if Mephs use of the tetra gammadion would be something interesting to discuss from an IC perspective. I'm totally fine with other vamps calling Meph racist or worse. Hell I encourage others to Bash Meph over it!!! I will not take it as a personal attack against me the player. But Meph is not going to sit idly by and just take the abuse. He will try his best to convert other vamps to share his point of view. Right now I am just waiting on a definitive ruling whether the image in and of itself breaks the proboards TOS. Here is a link to the image in question. But beware... It could offend anyone who is hyper-sensitive to swastika imagery i17.photobucket.com/albums/b75/Mephistophlese2k/Glowingtetragammadion.jpgR. I don't get it... Is Mephistophlese turning racist? I thought the devil took in everyone democratically Bad joke, sorry... couldn't help myself (but I love that name <.<) Anyway, so... is he? Or is he going on about peace and all the stuff the original swastica was about?

I suppose Meph is a racist. But not the traditional racist that humans think about. Meph believes that the vampire race is superior to all others especially the lycan beasts. Has nothing to do with the color of ones skin, religious beliefs, sexual orientation, national origins, age or anything else of that sort.

I'm pretty sure that it's already been solidly stated that the image breaks TOS.

I wonder what people believe about the swastika. There are those who know what it means, and won't pitch a fit about it. And then there are those that don't know the various meanings behind the symbol prior to the 20th century, who will pitch a fit. But ask them what they think the symbol means; I have a feeling they'll only say something vague about Hitler/Nazis, yet they'll struggle to actually pin a definition on the swastika. Symbols can usually be defined with one word but what word would the ignorant use? Racism? Well, racism is just the erroneous belief that one race is superior to another... it doesn't advocate genocide, violence, discrimination, or hate in any way. It's kind of like favoring one beer over another brand... you're not going to blow up that beer's competitors or protest against them in the streets. So why does the Swastika and all related symbols automatically get slapped with labels such as obscene, discriminatory, or hateful? It only takes a second to say "hey, that doesn't mean what you think it does" and then educate those that don't know the history of the symbol. Just because one madman used it as a symbol of power doesn't mean showing a swastika on you says that you want to go out and kill some Jews or something. No one should be offended by the tetra gammadion... a picture of Hitler, maybe, but not a symbol he stole from another culture.
I think I'm just babbling; feel free to ignore me.

That was my point about the Confederate flag and the KKK before, but not a lot of people understood it.
The grand majority of people will only accept and acknowledge one interpretation of a potentially offensive symbol, and they will do it in accordance with the societal norm... which for a lot of people now is what they either a) lived through (WWII, Jim Crow laws) or b) what they are taught in school (i.e. the North was awesome and the South were all black hating oppressive hillbillies).
Since proboards is a service provider that is used by many racial and ethnic populations as well as the Caucasian majority, their TOS is in place to try and regulate across a wide range of cultural understanding. To do that, they need to use as broad a generalization about offensive symbols as they can. Unfortunately for some, the tetra gammadion falls into the 'bad' category because of it's association with the Nazi's in the mid 1900's.
Fair? Not always. Still rules we have to follow? You bet'cha.

Here is what I read in the TOS
3. CONTENT RESTRICTIONS
Your web site must conform to the following standards to be eligible to utilize this service:
1. User's content must comply in a manner consistent with any and all applicable laws of the State of California and the US Federal Government. 2. User's web site may not contain content promoting the use of illegal drugs, alcohol, sex, pornography, nudity, or any other form of adult content, profanity, hate, "spam," fraud, racism, mlm, pyramid schemes, or promote any illegal activity.
My understanding is that the swastika in and of itself does not promote racism. It is the context in which it is used that matters. therefor I I would say that from a legal aspect Mephs use would not break TOS.

It's a shame that proboards take every statement made on their forums as the exact opinion of the people posting. Say I wanted to praise Visconti's "The Damned" or Cavani's "The Night Porter", and say I praised the nazi characters in both of them (because they are pretty awesome characters >.> played by two of my favourite actors and yum... I'll stop now >.<). Would proboards take me as praising real people and the expression of passionate (albeit arguably misplaced) emotions? That's just silly; they aren't real. Just like our characters aren't real... Bah.

*flails* the blue plus the red kills my eyes!
I think if you can make sure that it's plainly obvious it's not being used in that case, and that's what proboards has said is the case, then fine. But the minute it starts promoting racism, it'll get pulled and I'll keep my eye out for it.
I guess that'll go for every symbol. Provided it doesn't actively promote racism or hatred then it shouldn't break TOS and it'll be fine.
