Oh yeah, and I actually like the movies, mainly because I refuse to read the books. I read "The Last Vampire" series and tons of vampire books when I was growing up because they sparked interest in me. I've read everything from Anne Rice to to R.L.Stine, and nobody has quite the same take on vampirism.

Thus said, the Meyer chica makes tons of mullah off of her shoddy version of what vampires are. Yeah she sucks at portrayal, but she also hit her target audience dead on. That was her goal, she did it, she made money from it.

End of story.

I helped host the Breaking Dawn book release at Books A Million in my town. I was literally the second person in Ocala to have bought a book voucher for it. And I was interviewed by a reporter who was doing a piece on the release event. Oh...and I even stole both Breaking Dawn posters that BAM had displayed. Bitches didn't see me comin. >.>

But when I saw that movie...-I- died a little on the inside.

I like the books...4th one was a little eh...but the movie was utter shit that makes Baby Jeebus cry.

I actually enjoyed the books, but I also see a very different side to them. The vampires aren't what I picture them to be, but that doesn't mean that she needed to write them how -I- wanted them. It's not my book, it's hers. There's a whole lot of symbolism in them that I've seen because of my own background that I happen to share with Stephenie Meyer, and it was actually refreshing for me to read fiction from an LDS author that wasn't the same formula that we always have to carry in my bookstore.

I hope you do enjoy them for what they are Puawai.

Oooh, I'll have to read then most certainly. I've not read anything by a (reasonably devout) LDS member since Card's Alvin Maker, and Ender's series.

Alright. So I read through the entire thread before I responded because...>.> I wanted to get a feel of what was going on. Anyway, to the point.

As I said before many many times, I despise Twilight. I read one chapter of it and I was done. I couldn't stand it. I hated the concept of everything. I hated that they were vegetarian vampires. I hated how obsessed Bella was with Edward. I hated how easily she was willing to accept he was a vampire. I didn't think there was much realness in that point. I get that it was super natural. But...this girl has never encountered a vampire before other than the ones she may have read about. Or watched in the movie theaters. But how things played out is that...she easily wanted in on that type of life. I just, for myself, personally could not wrap my head around that.


Of course most can pick on the fact that I absolutely love Harry Potter. First off...JK Rowling is a better writer than Stephanie Meyers. That's just my opinion. She blows her out of the water. But I also think that Dean R. Koontz, Keith Ablow, Stephen King, and most definitely Jodi Picoult blows Stephanie Meyers out of the water.

Harry Potter was the first series that I read that is classified as YA. I hadn't touched a YA book since the sixth grade upon the discovery of Dean R. Koontz. I just feel like Harry Potter as a character had more substance than Bella Swan will ever have in her pinky as a character. Why? Throughout the series, Bella remained a teenage girl obsessed with a vampire. She never really broke out of the mold. She was just a teenage girl obsessed with a vampire. And Edward was just a vampire obsessed with a human girl. And of course Jacob was just a guy who was obsessed with a girl that could never really love him completely.

Really...Bella and Edward are like....the vampire adaptation of Lois and Superman. If she continued with the series, Edward would always be saving Bella. There really isn't anything else to the story line. Only reason Twilight is popular is because she did one thing: She made the vampires in the book humane. They were like real people. So tweens were able to connect because they could actually feel sorry for Edward because at fourteen years old, everyone thinks they know what love is.

I thought I was in love with a guy six years my senior when I was fourteen. Lol. >.> Don't get me started on that.

Really? Can anyone say that Bella actually changed through out the entire series? Can anyone deny that she didn't remain the same obsessed teenage girl who was clumsy and always ending up getting in danger? At least in Harry Potter, you could actually see Harry grow into becoming a man. Twilight, the most adult thing Bella did was get married and have a daughter. Even that doesn't exactly make you an adult either.

I despise Twilight because without the whole supernatural aspect and the fact that Meyers made vampires a bit more humane, you'd have a generic YA series. Without those two things, her series would have just been sitting on the shelves of bookstores with the rest of them. And no one would have really batted an eye to it or gave it a chance because she isn't the best of writers.

Really? If you wanted some generic teen love triangle, just read Peach Girl. It's a manga. But holy moly, it's Twilight in a nut shell without the whole supernatural concept.

Really, Puawai, I recommend reading any book by Jodi Picoult. The woman is -amazing.- And I think you'd enjoy her books.

Wolf, I totally agree. I don't have the patience to sit down and write four books that not only flow well, but have a twist that appeals to young readers of our day and doesn't follow the mainstream myths. Kudos to Stephenie.

Also, every time someone reads a Twilight book, Jim Butcher slips a little more toward alcoholism and Brian Sanderson dies a little inside.

That and only that is the only thing in this entire thread that made me giggle.

Now that's amazing writing, when you come to the end of the book, not really realising how come it's finished, and then you realise everything was around for you to see. Lots of people I lent the book to told me they had experienced that.

Hyperion / Endymion rock too.

The Twilight series appeals to the young and idealist, and sold much. In that this author was successful. It does not mean the author will make it into literacy books, nor leave a lasting impression as Anne Rice did on the subject.

I happen to not like the series, though I waited until I had read all the books before I felt entitled to say that.
I don't intend to go watch the movies, since I have yet to see one film doing justice the the book that was at its origin (the only exception being to my eye Lord of the rings, but we're talking about 3 movies for one book there).
Good luck to those who like it. I hope it brings warmth and happiness to you. I understand what you may like, but I just don't share it.
